Roberta is Mohawk and an active member of her community, Six Nations of the Grand River. She is committed to creating a better life for her children and grandchildren. Alongside a 32-year career as a nurse, she is a strong advocate for healing and is part of the Survivor driven, Mohawk Village Memorial Park. She advocates for a truthful accounting of the history of the Mohawk Institute Indian Residential School which she attended from 1957-1961. Her commitment to truth telling includes her personal research work and contributions to the Woodland Cultural Centre’s archives on Canada’s dark history. Most recently, she and Survivors of the Mohawk Institute have come together to form the Survivor-led, Survivors’ Secretariat, where she acts as a Board Member. The Survivors’ Secretariat works to ensure that answers are found, and the truth is told about unmarked burials associated with Mohawk Indian Residential School.
