Fern Chisel is an Anishinabekwe from Lac Seul First Nation (Obishikokaang Aki) in Treaty #3 Territory—known as the Place of the White Pines. She holds an Honours Bachelor’s Degree in Indigenous Learning from Lakehead University, where her work focused on Anishinaabemowin language revitalization and the challenges of second-language acquisition in classroom settings.
Fern is currently part of the Bringing Our Children Home Initiative, a community- and survivor-led team coordinating the search for children who went missing or never returned from the Pelican Lake Indian Residential School. She has also worked in cultural roles with the Northern Ontario School of Medicine and Nishnawbe Aski Nation. In addition to her work Fern is pursuing graduate studies in History. Further deepening her commitment to Indigenous research and storytelling.
Passionate about Indigenous knowledge systems, history, and cultural continuity, Fern is deeply engaged in community-based learning, oral history, and ceremony. Her work is grounded in the strength of and appreciation for her family, community, and the preservation of Indigenous ways of knowing.
