Angela Ashishkeesh

Elder

Angela was born along the Lawashi River and raised in Attawapiskat. A survivor of St. Anne’s Residential School, she later completed her university studies at Laurentian. She is a mother of three, grandmother of nine, and great-grandmother of five. Angela is deeply committed to the preservation of her Cree language and works with the Ojibway and Cree Cultural Centre on simultaneous translation, document translation, and courtroom interpretation. Throughout her life, she has participated in Women’s Traditional dance at powwows, served on the founding board of the Misiway Health Centre, and offered guidance and support to her community. She remains active in Indigenous ceremonies and on the round dance and powwow trail.
